Singapore Lyric Opera's main objective is to promote and present western opera. Since its inaugural performance of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in 1991, SLO has been active in presenting annual seasons of operas, concerts and musical events for the enjoyment of Singaporeans from all walks of life and to give opera fans opportunities to enjoy operas not frequently performed in the Asia-Pacific region. Notable productions in recent years include Madama Butterfly (2005), Le Nozze di Figaro (2006), Il barbiere di Siviglia (2007), La Traviata (2008), Turandot (2008), Les contes d’Hoffmann (2009), La Bohème (2010), Carmen (2011), Salome (2011) and Don Giovanni (2012). Its production of Richard Strauss' Salome placed the company as the first in Southeast Asia to produce this work. Directors who have worked with the Company include Andrew Sinclair (Royal Opera House, London), David Edwards and Tom Hawkes from the UK, Lo King Man (Hong Kong) and Ivan Heng (Singapore). As part of the Company’s objective of bringing opera to the wider community, SLO presents various programmes such as the Opera in the Park at the Singapore Botanic Gardens which has played to more than 20,000 audiences since 2008, and the Opera Café, a public platform for fans and music lovers to perform their favourite operatic numbers. In addition, SLO works with local community service organizations to bring the joy of singing to senior citizens and disadvantaged children. As an integral member of the local music community, SLO encourages participation in the arts and nurtures future generations of musicians through the 4 performing groups formed under its wing: Singapore Lyric Opera Chorus (SLOC), set up in 1990 to give opera enthusiasts with fine voices and acting abilities the opportunity to fulfill their performing aspirations. SLO Youth Choir (SLOYC), formed in 2008 to provide a platform for older children and youths to showcase their musical talents on stage. SLO Children’s Choir (SLOCC), which complements SLO’s mission in education and outreach. Children between the ages of 8 to 16 years are given opportunities to be musically trained in both voice and performance skills. SLO Orchestra, an important performance platform for established as well as up-and-coming musicians and conductors.
