Tubist Tan Yaocong is a rare breed among Singaporean brass musicians. Although he picked up the instrument through his school band and excelled at it, he was not drafted into the Singapore Armed Forces Bands during his National Service, serving in the Military Police unit instead. After NS, instead of going to the US for professional studies as most Singaporean brass players studying abroad do, he pursued his training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the UK. He tells SG-MUSIC.NET about his experiences in the UK and offers advice for those considering a career in music.
